Kiribati and the Gilbert Islands

Kiribati actually consists of three main island groups: the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands, and the Line Islands. The last of these includes Kiritimati (formerly known as Christmas Island) – the world's largest coral atoll.

Ninety per cent of Kiribati's total population of 119,940 (according to the 2020 census) live in the Gilbert Islands.
